The first person to mentor Ben was his own mother Sonya Carson. She was the earliest, strongest and most impacting force on Ben's life as said by Ben. She mentors him by teaching the importance of education and also pushes him beyond his limits and encourages him. She tells him he can do anything. As a result of Sonya Carson mentoring Ben develops a sense of determination, love for god and also a value for education. His faith in the lord is what carries him through college when times seem tough and makes him a kind person. This leads to him becoming a neurosurgeon and saving the life of many children and making medical breakthrough because of his vast knowledge. He performs operations on children who are said by professionals to be a hopeless case and he ends up saving their live. Sonya is the wisest mentor in Ben's life.

One of three ROTC colonels in Detroit by the time he was a senior in high school, Ben turned down a scholarship to West Point. The reason?
