The Ancient Egyptians writing was called hieroglyphics or hieroglyphs, just like ours is the alphabet.

The Egyptian letters or symbols and their origins were quite complex.

Some symbols represented letters or groups of letters.

Others represented ideas like an action, an animal, an object, etc. These are called determitives(they are placed after the written in letters version of the word, and clarify the meaning of the words).

Hieroglyphs were created purely to write and record the ancient Egyptian language and the two things are inseparably linked. The sound value of each hieroglyph often relates to the object portrayed - but it relates to the ancient Egyptian word for that object and has nothing to do with the English name.

Importantly, hieroglyphs did not record any vowel sounds, so only the consonant skeleton of each word was represented - this would be like us today using the picture of a hat (with consonants ht) and using that picture to represent words like hit, hot, hate and hoot.

For example, the front view of a man's face is called Hrin ancient Egyptian (where H represents an emphatic h sound also found in modern Arabic). In the ancient Egyptian language the word for "upon" sounds very similar, so the picture of a face can be used for both "face" and "upon" - when "face" is the intended reading, a short vertical line is placed after the sign to indicate that it reads exactly as it is written; without the line then it means "upon". Context will also help determine the exact meaning.
