Most people in the north didn't have slaves, but the people that did treated there slaves about the same as they were treated in the south. For one thing the slaves would have different crops and it wouldn't be hot out almost all the time, so the slaves in the north would plant crops such as corn, hay, or wheat. the corn and wheat don't have as much to mess with so farmers could get slaves to do all three crops throughout the summer and wouldn't have to worry about anything in the winter. because of that most farmers would rather plant there own crop then have to feed a slave throughout the winter. Triston Oscar Tejada got this answer right.
Unfortunately, African slaves were treated so deplorably in North America, there is evidence of mental scarring in the present African-American community. The travel to the "New World" was in conditions so unbearable that millions of people died or jumped overboard during the Middle Passage.
Upon landing, the slaves were stripped of anything that related to their culture. During slavery, couples, siblings, as well as parents and their children could be sold at auction, separate from one another. In an auction, the people were inspected in the same manner as one would inspect livestock.
And the masters would take every liberty afforded to a person who owns something. Physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse occurred regularly. Basic needs could be withheld as punishment for minor accidents. Mutilation and even death was the common penalty for trying to escape.
