Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov, then a Senior Sergeant in a tank regiment in the Soviet Army, got interested in arms design while recovering from battlefield injuries in 1941. His experiences in the war showed him that a lighter and more capable firearm was needed to replace the Mosin bolt action rifle.
He submitted several designs to the Soviet authorities. His first one got him in trouble with his commanding officers, but it also got him noticed. He was transferred form the army to a research and development facility. While he was working there the government set up a competition for a new rifle design. He worked to fulfill the conditions set out in the competition and after making some requested improvements came up with the AK.
