  1. In the 1930s the car radio phone was developed and put in service in several large cities. Even in cities that had dial phone exchanges all car radio phone calls were made through the operator and it was not uncommon to have to wait a half hour to connect to an operator to make a call. This system could not handle more than 3 to 12 total calls in one city, depending on the transmitter/receiver designs used.
  2. While working on solutions to the limit of 3 to 12 calls in one city, in 1947 Bell Labs researchers developed the concept of cellular communication, where an area would be divided into hexagonal cells and calls would be handed off from tower to tower as the car radio phone moved from one cell to another. However it was decided that the vacuum tube based electronics of the time could not meet the requirements of a cellular system, so A. T. & T. did not attempt to make cellular car radio phones.
  3. In 1969 A. T. & T. decided the semiconductor based electronics of the time could meet the requirements of a cellular system, so they began negotiations with the FCC for radio bandwidth allocation and began the design of cellular car radio phones (they had no plans to attempt designing handheld cellphones).
  4. In 1971 Motorola designed the first handheld cellphone. However mostly due to limitations of the rechargeable batteries of the time, this cellphone was about the size and weight of a brick and the batteries ran down in about an hour. It proved that handheld cellphones were possible, but itself was not really practical for use by the public.
  5. In the 1980s and 1990s improvements in miniaturization of electronics and batteries with more capacity gradually made the handheld cellphone truly practical. By the end of the 1980s the now obsolete original car radio phone systems were all shutdown and replaced with cell towers, although car cellphones remained in use for a while where calls still had to be made through an operator (safer than dialing while driving).
