Security Guard Classes Offer Many Job Opportunities?

Even in today’s hard economic times, jobs in the security field continue to boom. Security guard classes offer the kind of training that will open up numerous job opportunities. Many security guards use their training and experience as a jumping off point to other law enforcement career options. Most courses and certification programs offer training that is similar to the type of training a police officer goes through. Taking security guard classes can prepare you for working at many types of businesses such as banks, stores, and shopping malls, as well as large security companies. It can even be a starting point to creating your own security business. With today’s growing concerns over national security, the Department of Homeland Security is currently hiring individuals with security guard backgrounds. Eligibility and requirements vary from state to state when it comes to security guard training. Most states require you to be at least 18 years of age and to pass a criminal background check. Some schools and security companies may even require credit checks and drug testing. Most require a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Classes usually fall under two main categories. There are training programs for armed security and for unarmed guards. Students typically learn how to take detailed reports, how to identify potential security problems, how to respond to emergencies, detain suspects, and basic self defense. Classes prepare individuals for a job that isn’t easy. In fact, there are definitely risks involved in a career in this field. A guard may work in a station or may be required to patrol an area. They may be required to carry out a combination of the two. The main purpose of a security professional is to deter criminal activity with their presence. They may also have to intervene or report ongoing crimes and be called to testify in court. Some security jobs require screening individuals and property in areas such as airports and government buildings. These jobs may require additional security guard classes to learn the proper procedures. In order to find security guard classes and job opportunities, do a quick search online. Check out local vocational schools and community colleges to see what they offer.
