During the late 1800's many people were experimenting with making machines that would fly. Many tried to emulate birds, some others were obsessed with motive power. Some of these machines were dangerous to the operators and some were totally impractical. Many knew they needed wings and these were often constructed of wood, but usually much heavier than they should be. Wings were covered with fabrics, also much heavier than necessary. It Wasn't till they learned to build with very light but strong wood and wing use coverings like varnished muslin that things started to get off the ground. Control and power still weren't clearly understood, some machines even had steam engines.
