Ignatius Loyola, a professional soldier, who whilst recovering from serious wounds underwent a "spiritual revelation" convincing him that his life should henceforth be devoted to serving God, & specifically the Catholic Church & the Papacy. He founded the Jesuits in Paris while at school, he gathered some other interested students together to participate in his Spiritual Exercises, and the Jesuits were formed in 1534. Later Pope Paul III approved the Order in 1540.
The Society of Jesus, whose members are known as Jesuits, were founded in August of 1534. They were founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius had been a wild young man; courting many women, drinking excessively, and fighting for Spain in the army. It was in a battle in Pamplona that he sustained an injury to the leg that would forever change his life. Ignatius was taken from the battlefield to recuperate, and he was staying in a house with only two books to read: The Bible and the Lives of the Saints. Through reading these books, Ignatius decided to devote his life to Christ. When he was healthy enough to leave, he set about on a pilgrimage to Rome, and experiences he had while traveling form the basis of his Spiritual Exercises. As people encountered Ignatius in universities, he amassed men who wanted to follow him and learn from him, and the Society was created. They received their charter from the Pope in 1534.
