This is a theory put forth by Tim Maltin which is actually quite sound. It posits that the cold night air created a mirage which made the background appear higher in the sea, thus masking the iceberg in the foreground.
Typically, rough seas will slosh against an iceberg and create foam and spray. There was an absolute flat calm that night so this did not happen and the berg was not spotted until it was too late to turn.
