In the late 18th century, the English East India company was buying tea and silk from China for sale in England.England at this time produced nothing that could be easily sold in China. The Manchus were unwilling to allow the entry of foreign goods. The British could buy tea only by paying silver coins or bullion. This meant an outflow of treasure from England. So they searched for a commodity they could sell in China, something they could persuade Chinese to buy.The British merchants began illegal trade in opium. While the British cultivated a taste for Chinese tea the Chinese became addicted to opium. As the market for opium grew in China the British forced Indian peasants in Bengal to produce opium. From 1780s,the village headmen began giving them money advances to produce opium. The cultivators were tempted to accept the offer hoping to meet their immediate needs and pay back the loan at a later stage. Thus the Bengal peasants had to cultivate opium on the best land. The government pay was low and they became poorer.
