The Columbia River navigation channel begins at the Columbia River bar and continues five miles upriver at a depth of 55 feet and a width of 2,640 feet. After which, it maintains a depth of 40 feet and a width of 600 feet for 100 miles to the Portland Harbor. The channel passes under the Astoria Bridge, with a vertical clearance of 208 feet and a horizontal clearance of 1070 feet, and the Longview Bridge, with vertical and horizontal clearances of 198 feet and 1085 feet, respectively.
However, the 40' deep Columbia River navigation channel is only a small part of the Columbia River that is dredged out to accommodate ocean going ships traveling in and out of the Port of Portland (OR). The river itself varies considerably in width between Oregon and Washington from typically 1 mile wide to 14 miles wide at the mouth at Astoria. Here are the widths of narrowest parts in various sections which are the various crossing of the Columbia River:
Astoria-Megler Bridge: 14 miles
Lewis and Clark Bridge: 2,722 feet
Vancouver-Portland Bridge: 3,538 feet
Bonneville Lock and Dam: 2,690 feet
Bridge of the Gods: 1,856 feet
Hood River Bridge: 4,418 feet
The Dalles Bridge: 3,339 feet
Biggs Rapids Bridge: 2,567 feet
John Day Dam: 7,635 feet
Umatilla Bridge: 3,433 feet
McNary Dam: 7,365 feet
The Columbia or Missouri River. I think :)
In spring 1805, they continued to the headwaters of the Missouri River, struggled across the Continental Divide at Lemhi Pass, and headed west along the Salmon, Clearwater, Snake, and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific. They landed at the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon on November 7 1805. The day was rainy and foggy, and the Columbia River estuary was four or five miles wide and they could not see the Oregon side of the river or Point Adams at the mouth of the river in the distance. But they were close enough to have reached their goal.
Oregon
It is possible that the term kimooenim recorded by Lewis and Clark was the Walla Walla name for the Columbia - unfortunately their records are confused and unclear on this point. The term walla walla refers to a tributary of the Columbia, and means "small running water" or "small rapid river" in contrast to the Columbia itself.

The Mississippi River is wider than the Columbia River. The Mississippi River varies in width along its course, but at its widest point near Alton, Illinois, it can reach over 3 miles wide. In comparison, the Columbia River is typically less than a mile wide.
