When you pluck a thick string the sound the guitar makes comes out deeper then it does when you pluck a thin string.
You are talking about PIZZICATO, the act of plucking the strings of a stringed instrument. It creates a more muffled sound, because the string vibrates but not for long due to the short plucks versus the sliding of the bow.
A plucked string has many modes of vibration which all occur simultaneously; most of these correspond to overtones or harmonics of the fundamental frequency of the vibrating string. Near the center of the string, the fundamental frequency has the largest amplitude; a pickup at 1/4 of the length of the string will be at the point of maximum amplitude of the second harmonic and at a null point for the fourth harmonic. This position gives a strong, full, mellow tone. A pickup at 1/8 of the length of the string (closer to the bridge) will be at the point of maximum amplitude of the third harmonic, and will also get a lot of the fourth and fifth harmonics. This gives a much brighter tone. The change in tone caused by plucking the string close to the neck versus close to the bridge is based on the same idea: bringing out the harmonics in the string in different proportions. The advantages of finger style guitar playing would that the player can strike 4 or 5 points versus just one with a pick. Also, finger style guitar playing allows for playing some chords which are not possible with a pick.
A: There is no difference much in performance. But if a tube is replaced by a solid state rectifier the gain would be approximately 100 volts and assuming the DC caps are rated for this higher voltage it would be OK. Since there is higher voltages the dynamic of the amplifier will change accordingly.
If you have decided on a hard case versus a soft case for your guitar, there are several places online that you can purchase one. There is a variety of cases available on Ebay as well as on Amazon. There are some other specialty sites such as Musician's Friend and Sweetwater where you can find them as well.

I started out with a very cheap guitar but nowadays you can get better quality instruments for cheap. I now play a Norman B18 acoustic guitar and I recommend it as I find it is a nice balance of price versus quality.
