The effects would be much better than the actual consequences (if any). It would stop the illegal selling of it (decreasing the underground market). Also depending on how the laws are put together the government can actually make money off of taxes (but in my opinion it should be legal to grow your own as well).

well the justification for making it illegal is the "gateway theory" which assumes that use of marijuana will lead to use of other drugs.

if you made marijuana a legal drug, you wouldn't have to be introduced to the black market (where harder drugs are sold) to get it

therefor, I believe, if marijuana was legalized it would no longer serve as a gateway for harder drugs

If you'd rather have a historical example you only have to look at the years this country spent fighting alcohol use during prohibition. Some of the statistics are telling

During prohibition-alcohol use up, organized crime up, alcohol quality questionable

After prohibition- alcohol use DOWN, organized crime down, alcohol regulated and taxed

The study of the failures of prohibition would lead us to believe that legalization would actually reduce marijuana use while adding tax revenue and protecting users by offering them a consistent product without all the variability in active ingredients found in black market drugs

But he real answer is, for most of us, nothing would happen. marijuana is cheap, quality has been steadily rising for decades, use is prevalent and enforcement is lax, in most areas. Legalization for the most part would only mean that drug testing for jobs would exclude marijuana which would be nice as it is still in your system long after you cease feeling the effects

States where it was previously Illegal would find a new income stream, Alcoholics could find a suitable, less damaging, recreational pharmaceutical of choice (Alcohol is a drug also) and may even quit drinking altogether. (myself as an example)

A buzzy heady rush that gives you a high that you would expect fromm smoking a ton of low grade shwag. "Legal Bud" is actually not THC depleted cannabis at all, It is a Hybrid of the hemp plant that has been crossed with many different plants such as salvia and kratom.

The legal sell of marijuana will bring millions if not billions of dollars in the form of tax's to America ... But that's not the best part... The legalization of marijuana will bring the halt to the enforcement of selling and consuming the drug; therefore there would be no need to spend millions on enforcing marijuana laws ... The money that would have went to stopping the sells or consummation of the drug can go to better use... And the American court systems and jail wont be clog with miner drug charges... Its a win win for a drug that's worse symptoms are putting you to sleep and getting you hungry...
