A good study of psychology would give you personal insight into why you are the way you are and why you do the things you do personality or mentally-wise. And it would give you insight into the personality of others, helping you better understand the actions and motives of other people.

It helps you understand yourself by understanding others. We humans really aren't that different and the way other people think can really give you insight into yourself. You must be willing to look inward though, you may not like all you find, but you can change it if you know what it is!

People often study psychology in order to gain better understandings of why individuals behave the way they do. In the process, they may be taught scientific values such as basing judgments on solid evidence rather than on stereotypes or on hearsay.

Whether this study in itself will make you a betterperson or not might depend on a variety of things, what your personal values were before you started studying psychology, for instance.

A psychologist might actually begin to investigate this matter by defining what is meant by "a better person". Then he or she could ask more specific questions. Will psychology students be more likely than other students to forgive themselves and others of annoying habits such as dropping litter in the street, for example, or treat themselves and others more kindly? Finding out what research had already been done in this area might be the next step before investigating by using surveys, experiments, clinical observations, etc.
