Oil is a lubricant that is used to reduce friction, heat and dirt. It can be used to perform work in the case of hydraulics. The properties of it are:

1. Liquid

2. Viscosity (and this can be changed.)

3. Slippery

When it is produced by natural processes and brought out of the ground, it has none of the properties that are needed for practical use. It has to be refined and chemicals are added to achieve the desired specifications.
