In terms of 'azimuth' and 'elevation' ... which compass-direction to face first,

and then how high above the horizon to look.

(Note that both change during the course of the night.)

The same as its location in day-time, except that the bit you are on is facing away from the Sun for a few hours as the Earth rotates.

A more scientific approach would be the location of the Solar System in the galaxy: a privileged position somewhere out on one of the arms, which gives us - or at any rate observatories - a view out between the local stars into deep space.

You can say that the star is in such-and-such a constellation, that it is near such-and-such a well-known star, or you can indicate coordinates. Several coordinate systems are used.
