is this nano new? if so you have to keep it plugged in to your computer for a while because it's the iPod's first dose of electricity.
iPod nanos take about an 2 hours or so to fully charge.even if it doesn't say charged it still might be three quarters full.
if you're iPod nano is old (a phew years) it might be time to have you're batteries replaced by a professional.
if all these things don't work....well....your iPod is dead.
Reasons why your i Pod might not be holding a charge:
- the i Pod is to old
- it doesn't want to or is "rejecting"
- your cord is damaged
- your computer has a virus that has went to your i Pod
- the i Pod is filled with songs/pictures/videos that there isn't enough room for charging
I would:
- take off some things on your i Pod
- get a new cord
- return the i Pod
- check to see if there are viruses in the computer
- if there are viruses, your i Pod is damaged for good
- let a friend try charging it at their house
- sync your i Pod from someones computer
If none of this helps then your i Pod is damaged fully.
If your iPod will not charge, there may be something wrong with the cord or the battery. Make sure the battery is almost out of juice before trying to recharge it.
your ipod or your charger is broken i wold have somewone chake it out
make sure your usb cable is plugged in to the computer and click on your ipod icon and see if the battery life is full if that doesnt work contact the apple store.

The operating system has absolutely nothing to do with the charge time. The iPod nano should take about 3 hours to charge completely.
