Possibly a hole in the exhaust
muffler or exhaust could be damaged....if it has aftermarket exhaust it will sound different since it is not a V8.
Exhaust leak at Exhaust manifold to head gasket or oring at exhaust manifold pipe.
The Ford Explorer may have an exhaust leak. An exhaust leak is loud and will lead to sluggish acceleration as well as a loud raspy sounding vehicle.
if you have an 3.1 it dont sound bad, it sounds like an v8 at idle, but not as loud
check for exhaust leaks around the manifold inlets and outlets.

yes I have a set of them on my 1995 z-71 chevy 5.7 they sound better to me than flow masters and are cheaper
You could get a "turbo" exhaust system or "glass packs". An ovrsized exhaust (3 inch) can produce a slightly different, deeper sound.
The metal band holding the exhaust is broken.
