What is IBC?

IBC
IBC is the acronym for Inflammatory Breast
Cancer. IBC is recognized as an advanced form of breast cancer that is usually not detected by
mammograms or ultrasounds.
Common IBC Symptoms:
a swollen breast
a painful breast
incessant itchy breast
a rash on one breast
a bug bite that won't go away
nipple changes
a hardened area in the breast similar to a pencil lead, not a
lump
These symptoms may appear overnight without warning. If they do
not go away with creams, ointments or antibiotics, demand that your
doctor rule out IBC.
Mammograms usually don't pick up IBC because so often there is
no lump.
Doctors misdiagnose Inflammatory Breast Cancer as a breast
infection or mastitis. The only real way to rule out IBC is with a
biopsy or PET scan.

What is inflammatory breast cancer?

Inflammatory Breast
Cancer
Inflammatory breast
cancer (IBC) is the most aggressive form of breast cancer and
is in a class of its own. Because there is usually no lump, this
type of breast cancer, mammograms/ultrasounds do not generally detect
ibc. IBC grows in nests and sheets and in most cases will be
diagnosed clinically. The symptoms can be a mass on your breast
that appears suddenly, a breast that is one cup size larger than
your other breast, a rash, mosquito bite or what appears to be a
bruise. If symptoms don't dissipate within a week after beginning
an antibiotic, please insist on a skin or punch biopsy. Although
this type of breast cancer is aggressive, and frightening, IF you
know the symptoms and are treated immediately, yes, you can be an
ibc survivor! IBC is treated with chemo first, not surgery because
it is in the dermal (skin) lymphatic system. Don't ever hesitate to
get another opinion if the doctor says it's nothing!
"Knowing the symptoms of IBC and prompt diagnosis is Vital For
Survival." Marilyn 'Mare Kirschenbaum
