There are five basic parts to a friendly letter: the heading, the salutation, the body, the closing, and the signature.
Heading
This includes your address and the date. It is located in the upper right hand corner of the letter.
Salutation This is the greeting that generally begins with the word ""Dear"" and is followed by the name of the person you are writing to. A comma is placed after the name. The salutation goes in the left hand margin, two lines below the heading.
Body
This is the main part of the letter where you write your information. Usually the paragraphs in the body are short. Skip one line after the salutation before you begin the body, and skip one line in between each paragraph.
Closing
This is written two lines below the body of your letter. It begins just to the right of the middle of the letter. Only the first word is capitalized. The closing is followed by a comma.
Signature
This is the final part of your friendly letter. It is written beneath the closing. Usually, you just need to write your first name; include your last name if you think there will be a question about who wrote the letter. For example, if you are writing to your teacher, and she has two students named Nathan, adding your last name would clarify which student had written the letter
