The data we have is:
a - b = -18 ........ equation (1)
a + b = 2 ........ equation (2)
Adding equations (1) and (2)
(a - b) + (a + b) = -18 + 2
2a = -16
a = -8
Using a = -8 in equation (2),
-8 + b = 2
b = 2 + 8
b = 10
