Surprisingly, many people thinks this. I had to set a friend's mother straight years ago, because she thought her 10 year old cat was so old she'd have to put her to sleep soon.

Last November, we put our father and son pair to sleep. They were only about 6 months apart in age, the son having been from an accidental pregnancy when the father was all of 4 months old.

They were 19 years old. They were both mostly blind, and the father had some form of cancer. Other than sight, the son was perfectly healthy, and could have probably made it several more years, if we hadn't known he would have grieved himself to death if we let him live instead of letting him go with his father. They were separate for a week once while the father was at the vet, and he lost half is body weight missing him during that time.
