When tectonic plates diverge (that is, move apart) they open up to the earth's mantle, thus letting magma escape out to the earth's crust, causing land to form.

Transversely, when plates converge (that is, come together) one shifts on top of the other, causing mountains to form, they slide past each other, causing earthquakes, or they both bow inwards, causing a dip in the land.

However, this all takes thousands upon thousands of years.

There will be many mountain ranges, because fault movement changes the flat plains into them.
