Hydrocodone is a synthetic derivative of codeine. It does not contain the actual substance.
I would also add that in my experience, the nausea seen with use of codeine is rarely seen with hydrocodone.

∙ 13y agoThat really depends on what is meant by an allergy. It is not unlikely that you will have a similar reaction to hydrocodone as you had to codeine but you may not.
So if you had a true allergy to codiene like hives, chest tightness, throat swelling, wheezing etc then you should be very cautious. if you just had an adverse reaction to codiene such as nausea, drowsiness or skin itching then it would be reasonable to try the hydrocodone and see what happens.

∙ 12y agono, hydrocodone and loratab has the same compounds as codiene but a couple times stronger. they both carry some of the same ingredients. People who are allergic to hydrocodone are usually prescribed oxycodone (percocet) or hydromorphone.

I am allergic to morphine as well. I can take Vicodin, Lortab, Norco etc, but at higher doses (10mg or above) I do sometimes get very slight hives on my face, but not like with morphine. Anything 10mg and below and I've had no problem. That is just my experience. That being said, I cannot take oxycodone, Percocet or any of it's derivatives as it causes MAJOR hives, itching, burning sensation, and respiratory distress. Hope this helps.
