88 mph
The question was "where", not how fast it needed to go to travel. And, the answer to the question is he got the plutonium from a group of Lybian (not sure how it's spelled) terrorists who wanted him to build them a bomb, but instead used it to power the DeLorean. At the end, however, he used garbage to power it...it's much safer this way.
The top comment is correct, the reason why Doc gets shot in the first movie is because he stole the plutonium instead of making a bomb.
Fans of the Back to the Future trilogy will be pleased to learn that Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown's modified 1981 DeLorean DMC-12, better known as a time machine, is on display at Universal Studios Hollywood in California after a painstaking museum-quality restoration over the past year. While Universal used a handful of cars during filming from 1985 to 1990, this particular vehicle is referred to as the "Hero A" car, as it was the only Delorean featured in all three films.
Yes, the DeLorean that Doc Brown took to 1885 and then hid in the mine (wher it remains the entire 1885 portion of the movie) and the DeLorean that Marty took to 1885. Marty retrieves the 70 year old DeLorean from the mine in 1955 and takes it back to 1885. It is the same car existing two times in one time period.
Emmett Brown
The 1985 science fiction comedy film Back to the Futureis about a teenager named Marty McFly who goes back in time from 1985 to 1955 in a time machine built from a DeLorean DMC-12 by Emmett "Doc" Brown and inadvertently prevents his parents from falling in love. He must subsequently get them back together to ensure his existence and also find a way to return to 1985.

Doc brown stole the plutonium from the nuclear power plant. *edit* The above answer is INCORRECT. The plutonium was stolen from Libyan terrorists who gave it to him to make a bomb.
Emmet Brown in the movie Back to the Future!
The component part that Doc Emmet Brown invented to allow time travel in the rigged DeLorean in the movie Back To The Future (1985), was the Flux Capacitator.
It would have been impossible not to hear the noise made before the DeLorean appeared when it was that close to the house- but it was not necessary in the story to have them come outside and see it.
Lybian terrorists stole plutonium and asked Doc to make them a bomb. He gave them a fake bomb made up of pinball machine parts and used the plutonium for his new invention.
Plutonium. It is named after the ROMAN god Pluto. That's why the Lybians were after Doc Brown in Back to the Future...

First, contact Doc Brown. Ask him to come to your house with the Delorean. Perhaps he will let you drive, and if he does, set the console for some date in the future. Second, find a long stretch of open road, preferably straight. Third, accelerate to 88 miles per hour, and hold on. When you arrive in the future, be certain that you do not interact with your future self, and try not to alter the future time line. Paradoxes can ensue, and while it makes for a great movie, it could signal the end of time and space as we know it.
This depends on if you are asking about the time travel equipment or the what the car uses to achieve forward motion... the time travel system is electrical however it in the movie it needs a plutonium chain reaction to generate the incredible amount of electricity to make the time jump...according to the movie 1.21 Gigawatt's (basically 1219 Megawatts or 1.21 Billion watts)....an average modern nuclear power plant produces around 200 to 300 Gigawatt's.... however the delorean uses its factory installed internal combustion engine...and runs on ordinary gasoline to get the car up to 88 MPH and at this speed with the time travel equipment on time travel is achieved....however in Back to the future part 2 after being modifide in the future buy doc brown with the ability to fly the delorean some travels back in time when its struck by lightning even when it is was not moving forward... also the origonal plutonium reaction chamber has been also been replaced by a mister fusion micro fusion reactor that takes ordinary garbage and some how makes it under go nuclear fusion to create the electrical energy needed to travel in time... this was also done when doc traveled to the futue at the end of the first movie hope this answers that question properly and intelegently..
Harrison Brown is cool and is awesome at basketball... Future NBA
it will go brown
