He was in the CA gold camps in 1850 and the jeans worn by the miners didn't hold up well. They kept falling apart at the seams because of the water and dirt. So, he added brads to the pocket seams and other spots to reinforce them. The miners saw this and wanted it too. A business was born and the "gold" he found was in jeans.
