What are your first impressions of jack in the book lord of the flies?

The first impression you mighht gain from reading the start of Lord of the Flies is that it is a typical 'boys on a desert island' book. However even from the begining things don't follow the accepted formula for such stories. Ralph may well be an atractive hero figure but fat, asthmatic Piggy wearing a greasy wind-breaker and thick spectacles is nobody's idea of a hero. In the first pages Piggy has to go into the trees to answer a call of nature, which involves making grunting noises, hardly what you'd expect froma boys' tropical island adventure story. In short right from the word go the book begins to undermine your initial expectations and continues to do so for its entire length.

This is a matter of personal opinion and different people would have different views about the book. I personally think that the book is possibly one of the most profound and influential books ever written. Not only is it a realistic portrayal of how boys might behave away from the interference and prying eyes of adults it is also a work filled with symbolism. The book has great depth and can be read and appreciated on many different levels.

At the start of the book when he realises that he may be on a tropical island with no adults Ralph's initial reaction is to stand on his head as an expression of pure pleasure and joy.
