∙ 12y agoThey could be constructed rapidly and cheaply. They were an effective defense in the medieval period. They were at risk to attack by fire which led to the eventual construction of the more permanent stone fortresses and castles.

There are many disadvantages to motte and bailey castles incuding: * They could catch fire easily * They rot pretty quickly * They're not very strong People could climb the motte or palisade and jump the ditch.

∙ 9y agoMotte and bailey castles were quick and inexpensive to build, but there were several drawbacks. A few of the disadvantages were due to the fact that they were made of wood, which made them susceptible to burning and battering rams.
