Autotrophic heterokonts do not consume other organisms and produce energy by harvesting light, whereas heterotrophic heterokonts obtain their energy by consuming other organisms regardless of the presence of light.

The above is actually a good answer although a little difficult to understand. (although heterotrophic heterokonts are NOT carnivores).
In essence the diatoms that yu are thinking about (the ones that live on light) do not eat bacteria when placed in the dark.
I recently studied different types of protists, and Diatoms, being plant-like protists, are a separate category from Euglanoids. I learned that Euglanoids are the only plant-like protists which can, on occasion, be heterotrophs (predators, not plants). This would mean that yes Diatoms can eat other organisms.
yes it can eat bacteria
Yes?
Yes
they produce by photosynthesis and chemosynthesis. They also eat other bacteria
they eat them
they "engulf" the bacteria
Both elephant and bacteria can reproduce. There is a vast difference in size between an elephant and a bacteria but both equally essential for maintenance of the ecosystem of this planet. Bacteria can be prokaryote or eukaryote.
Animals get all the energy they need from the food they eat.
no, because it cannot see. hahaha!
Certain enzymes.
they eat tiny little turquoise bacteria Those little turquoise bacteria are called diatoms FYI ~leftyness~ :)
Amoeboids will eat pretty much anything smaller than themselves, inlcuding bacteria, diatoms, and cilliates.
They eat algae and diatoms
i know some types of plankton eat diatoms and so do sponges, jellyfish and crabs and ther is still many more things that eat diatoms
Diatoms are in kingdom protista. They are also in the plantlike protist category so therefore they are eukaryotic, single or many celled, and have chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll. The chlorophyll causes them to use energy from the sun to make food that they eat. Diatoms are also filter-feeders. As they move through water, they filter particles through their two silica shells as means of processing food.
They eat algae and diatoms
They eat algae and diatoms
Yes.
Many aquatic organisms consume diatoms. Diatoms are an important type of primary producer in marine and freshwater systems and are a type of algae. In marine systems, many zooplankton and some small fish consume diatoms.
