In the beginning of the book Tim is the average child- practically carefree. The chores he has are dreaded, molasses stolen here and there, waiting late at night to hear his brother's stories. By the end of the book he is responsible, mature, and just grown up. He understands how his father was wrong sometimes as well as his brother. By the end of the book a good word to describe him is "war worn".
