The woman must light a lamp to look for the coin because it was important to ensure that she could see clearly in the dimly lit space where she had lost the coin. Lighting a lamp would help her search more effectively and increase the chances of finding the lost coin.
parable of the lamp
Luke 8: Women minister to Christ; Parable of the soils; Parable of the Lamp; Christ's true brethren; Storm is stilled; Demons are cast into swine; Woman is healed; Jairus's daughter is raised.

Both are acceptable with different meaning. I read by the light of the lamp means I use the lamp to light the pages so that I can read them. I saw it in the light of the lamp means it was visible in that pool of light caused by the lamp.
