The Catholic Missionary work began in Samoa in 1845, this is an exercpt from the website, the History of Samoa:The Catholic Mission, known to the Samoans as the Church of the Pope, commenced its Work in Samoa about the year 1845, and is today firmly established throughout the whole group. One of its most famous adherents was the great Mataafa. In 1905, the construction of a beautiful cathedral in Apia, which had occupied over twenty years, was finished. The building is a landmark of white purity, and the sweetness of its bells will be remembered by all who have lived in Apia. The mission now controls numerous schools in Apia and elsewhere and an institution for instruction in tropical agriculture at Moamoa, three miles or so inland of the little capital.
There are several island antiosn that have the same time zone. Therefore all are the last countries to enter the new year The the west side international date line is where 2009 starts Those on the east side in what is known as the Western Hemisphere would be the last. Those countries are American Samoa- Pago Pago, Samoa (Apia), Niue (Alofi), Midway Islands, Jarvis Isl., Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll. Only one hour before that is Hawaii. - Peace
Sydney, Australia is one of the first cities in the world to celebrate the New Year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year I think that Wellington in New Zealand is the first city to celebrate the new years.
Samoa (Apia), Christmas Island (Kiritimati).
1 January, 1962
Since the end of 2011, the international date line passes between Samoa and American Samoa. From April to September Samoa (UTC+13) is 24 hours ahead of American Samoa (UTC-11), but from September to April Samoa observes Daylight Saving Time, making it 25 hours ahead of American Samoa. That means that when the time in Samoa is 00:30 on the 1st of March of a leap year, the time in American Samoa is 23:30 on the 28th of February. The distance between Pago Pago, American Samoa and Apia, Samoa is about 77 miles or 124 km, so I'm sure it can be flown in less than an hour.(In other words, yes.)

Samoa became an Independent Country on 1 January 1962. I stand corrected on the month and the day if I'm wrong, but the year is definitely 1962.
