Water is not isotonic. It can be hypotonic or hypertonic depending to the solution in which it is placed in. In other words, isotonic means that the concentration of the solutions are equal in strenght, this is not possible for water, it can be considered as hypo or hypertonic depending on the solution to which it is compared.
