The dateline does not cross Alaska. It would have, if it were drawn exactly along
the 180° meridian all the way from one pole to the other. But it was zigged and
zagged in several places, in order to avoid splitting any single political entity into
two different calendar dates. Can you imagine what life in Alaska would be like if
different parts of the state were always on different dates ! ?
