Athena came to Greece from the island of Crete, and may have originated as an early Near Eastern goddess. In the very early times, she was represented with snakes in her hair and on the hem of her dress. Athena was originally a sun goddess, and the snakes in her hair may have represented the rays of the sun. There is some evidence that some early Middle Eastern sun gods were represented with long hair or snakes on their heads.

The snake is considered to be one of her symbols, as her statue in Athens has a snake. Athena`s Aegis turns man-kind (or people) into stone.
