They are not exactly the same, but they are both software suites containing a number of standard applications, such wordprocessors and spreadsheets. The individual components are different and you have variations. For most computer users, they would find most of what they need in either of them.

In my opinion, Microsoft Office is too expensive for what it is. When you buy Microsoft Office, you are paying for the brand name. Open Office is free and simply looks less fancy than MS Office, but will do all of the same things that MS Office does. There's my two cents.
Star Office is a competitor to Microsoft Office, offering many of the same functions. It was for a time known as Oracle Open Office. Star Office can be downloaded and used free.
