Is Gideory Lockhart good or evil?

As Sirius Black says, the world is not only made up of good and bad people. Throughout our lives, we all do both good and bad things.

Gildeory Lockhart was a arrogant, selfish person who convinced people to tell them their stories, then wiped their memories and took credit for their work. So in a sense, yes, he did bad things. He forcibly took peoples memories away from them for his own selfish needs. When Harry and Ron discovered this, Lockhart threatened to remove the memories of two young boys rather than be revealed. Nobody would consider this the actions of a good person.

However, Lockhart's actions pale in comparison to those of Voldemort and his death eaters. Lockhart was not the main antagonist of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He was not an inherently cruel person, just a selfish one. He put others needs before his own. Therefore he wouldn't be considered evil (except perhaps, by those whose memories he took).
