HIV is so lethal because of the following characteristics:

· Its ability to destroy the immune system cells that are responsible for protection against infection, therefore leaving the body vulnerable to all infections. Some of the infections are caused microorganisms that do not naturally attack the human body, opportunistic pathogens, and these are very hard to treat; such as fungal pneumonia.

· Lower immune system also gives a chance for malignant cells to develop unchecked leading to different malignancies.

· HIV mutates constantly make it impossible for human immune system to develop any lasting immunity.

· It attacks blood platelets leading to thrombocytopenia (increased bleeding).

· It also attacks the nervous system leading to different manifestations.

Death occurs due to the infections, cancer, wasting of the body or a combination of the three.
