Drug users frequently take stimulants and opiates at the same time. They have a synergistic effect. You may have heard the term "speedball" before. A speedball is a combination of cocaine and heroin that is usually injected but can be smoked or insufflated. When you combine coke and heroin you feel the clean energy of cocaine and the warm euphoria of heroin - many think that this is the ultimate high. Other stimulants besides cocaine, such as Adderall, can be used of course, but the mix of smack and blow are the gold standard. Personally I stay far away from speedballing, because it is incredibly addicting and incredibly easy to overdose. John Belushi and River Phoenix both died from speedballing. With that said, if you're looking to potentiate opiates you can take a small dose (I take 10-15 mg) of amphetamine orally about half an hour before taking opiates. I have found this to be safe for me, but everyone's body chemistry is different - know yourself before you start mixing.

Opiates are central nervous system (CNS) depressants. They slow down most bodily functions, including respiration, heartbeat, digestion and confuse thinking and cognition. Some other common CNS depressants are alcohol, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines (tranquilizers).

Stimulants ... well ... stimulate the CNS, and essentially have an effect opposite to opiates. They include most drugs prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, along with illegal drugs such as methamphetamine and ecstasy. Where people normally use depressants to "chill out," stimulants tend to create feelings of energy, power, and intense concentration.

Both depressants and stimulants are highly addictive with prolonged use.

Technically it is an opiate, and often considered a narcotic and a depressant. With high doses, it will likely make you sleepy and even unconscious.

But if taken in small doses, it can make a person feel very well and even provide some amount of energy like a stimulant, but it is not related to know stimulants.

Even alcohol, a well known depressant, can have a slight stimulation effect when it first starts to take effect.
