No, they are not true stories. They are just thrillers set up to make you think it was footage that was recorded and found. When really it was just the low budget that made them go with something cheap. Like having the actors film the whole thing in the directors house. This however is why people think the movie is a real story.

The only way i know that is because at the end of the movie or the beginning of the me (before it even starts) it has an FBI warning On that warning it says how you cant copy this movie and how it is based on a true story and FBI warnings can't lie. I hope i answered your question.
