Santiago was an old man living what most would deem a tragic life, but he was optimistic and had gained humility in his old age, so much so that the tragedy that befell him wasn't a tragedy at all. it was just another experience and a lesson that reminded him yet again the universe works in mysterious ways. the boy's faith in him was reinforced and the town's opinions of him shaken.
No an old man is not sea and tragedy. Thank-you for your question
