Joan Lindsey's novel "Picnic at Hanging Rock" is entirely fictitious. It has absolutely no basis in fact, but the manner in which it was written does add to the possibility of it being based on a true story, and Joan Lindsey never dispelled this myth. In fact, she even hinted that it might be based on fact. In this way, greater interest was generated in the book. The only truth to the story is that the geological feature known as Hanging Rock is a real feature at Mt Macedon, north of Melbourne. Besides, Valentine's Day in 1900 (February 14) was a Wednesday. In the story it is stated to be a Saturday.

While the tradition is that the rock tried to follow Mohamed (S.A.W) into Heaven, the photographic evidence and eye witness accounts is that the rock is part of the mountain. The rock is undercut in such a way that there is access to the Well of Souls, but it is not levitating in any way from the rest of the mountain.
