Actually the novel is about both. Even in a non Puritan society adultery was seen as a capital sin. Maybe from the more contemporary point of view: we would look at Dimmesdale as te main culprit while we would try to protect Hester. In the Puritan society they were both to blame.
"The Scarlet Letter" explores themes such as guilt, shame, and societal judgment, which are still relevant in today's world. The novel's examination of the consequences of personal sins and the struggle for redemption resonates with contemporary discussions on morality, ethics, and social norms. Additionally, its portrayal of the complexity of human relationships and the impact of one's past on shaping identity continues to be thought-provoking.
It shows the after effects of sinning. People today have to face their sins and mistakes, just as Hester had to in front of the crowd outside of the prison. People can see everything you do and judge you for it.
The Scarlet Letter is a good book to read for a historical perspective, but also because the same themes of acceptance, ostracism, hypocrisy, and betrayal exist today... and literature helps us to tap into and think about our own time and our own challenges while looking at someone else's story, even fictional... because the themes and feelings and truth is still there, even if the story isn't about our time.
