The tablet screen contains two components:

1. transparent touch overlay - position sensitive point & click input device
2. backlit LCD panel - color flat panel display output device

There are also typically many other input/output devices in a typical tablet: camera - input, wifi - input/output, microSD slot - input/output, 3G - input/output, speaker - output, etc.

Input because even though on the surface it may look output, the information that you feed to it is stored inside the computer so in that sense, it's an input device

It can be both. If you draw on it, there is input. If a program produces a drawing for you, it is output.
