It should be fine. Before someone says its based on old Pentium technology, it isn't. The new Intel Pentium Dual Core processors are based on the Core 2 Duo core architecture (Merom-2M).

However it doesnt share the same amount of cache as the Core 2 Duo laptop versions have. Although I have one for my new laptop which I use for basic work each day. I have a proper desktop PC which I use to play games and such.

But expect the same technology and enhancements you see on the Core 2 Duo to be on the Pentium Dual-Core.

The Intel Pentium D uses the older, hotter, and slower NetBurst architecture of the Pentium 4. It would not be a good idea to invest in one for a new build. A Pentium Dual-Core would be faster, run cooler (thus can use a slower fan), is easily overclockable, and can be had for less than $100, depending on model.

The Pentium 4 was a line of CPUs manufactured by Intel from 2000 to 2008. The architecture (NetBurst) was based on depth pipeline to improve performance by reaching high clock speed. However, from late 2004, it becomes difficult to get higher frequencies due to heat dissipation. That's why Intel begins to focus on the development of dual-core processors (Pentium D). Finally, Intel discontinued NetBurst-based CPUs with Intel Core 2 Duo.

They were designed for different tasks, so they excel in different areas. The Pentium M was designed to be a mobile processor used in laptops. It does a good job at this by not generating much heat or requiring much electricity, and still performing well while doing this. The Intel Pentium 4 is a desktop processor, where heat and power usage aren't as much of a concern. Interestingly, the Pentium M does outperform the Pentium 4 in certain situations, but not enough that it would be considered a good replacement.

In today's market, the Pentium 4 is outdated. This processor is based on NetBurst architecture, replaced by Core architecture since 2006 and fully discontinued since 2008.
