Yes, sorta. The British system used in WW2 was organized into Regiments identified by a name, such as Wiltshire Regiment. These regiments had several numbered battalions that served in different units and theaters. A British regiment could have as many as 12 battalions, including training battalions and territorial battalions. So the entire regiment did not serve in one place. These battalions were identified such as "2/Wiltshire Regiment". A brigade was organized by several battalions or regiments. A brigade was usually identified by a patch that was worn on the shoulder. For example, the Highland Division Brigade [blue rectangular patch with "HD" in a circle], was comprised of battalions of Scottish regiments. Example of a brigade composed of battalions of same regiment. 169th Infantry Brigade - Gen. L. O. Lyne 2/5 West Surrey 2/6 West Surrey 2/7 West Surrey (Where 2/6th West Surrey designated the Second battalion of the Territorial Army.) The US Army at the beginning of WW2, had two brigades in an infantry division with two regiments in each brigade. Then they reorganized their divisions into "triangle divisions" and reduced the size to elimnate 1 regiment and the brigades.

How many troops in a confederate regiment?

On paper, an infantry regiment consisted of 10 Companies with 100 men in each for a total of 1000 men. This was a typical size of Union regiments when they were first formed and mustered into service. The Confederate regiments were not quite that size. Many didn't get to be that size as they were rushed into service. After the regiment went off to war, they began to lose men in combat. The regiment was trimmed down even smaller. It was common for a Confederate infantry company to be 40 men. It was common for Confederate regiments to be as small as 250 men during the last 2 years of the war. When the regiment experienced high loss of soldiers and officers, the regiment would be merged or "consolidated" with another regiment. Sometimes it was difficult to know this as they continued to be organized along their old regiment. Thus the 29th Mississippi Regiment and the 30th Mississippi Regiment in General Walthall's Brigade were merged into the 29th/30th Mississippi Regiment soon after the Battle of Missionary Ridge.

What were the different types of army units such as regiments during the civil war?

Answer The major unit on the field of battle was an ARMY. This was divided into CORPS, usually 2 or 3. Each Corps consisted of 2 DIVISIONS. The Division was divided into 2 BRIGADES, which was the primary unit that maneuvered on the battle field. A Brigade consisted of 4 to 6 Infantry Regiments and a battery of Artillery. Cavalry was organized into Brigade but were usually assigned as Regiments to support an infantry Brigade. Originally, the infantry Regiment was about 1000 men in 10 COMPANIES. A Company was the basic unit that a soldier identified with. The Company was commanded by a Captain, whereas the Regiment was commanded by a Colonel. The Brigade was usually commanded by a General and this may be the origin of the rank "Brigadier General". As the war progressed, the regiments became smaller and it was not unusual to find less than 200 men in a Confederate Regiment. Some regiments became so decimated, that they merged or combined, thus the name 29th/30th Mississippi Regiment. How big is an army regiment?

During the Vietnam War, a "US Army" regiment was generally equal to a brigade. Regiments (in the US Army) were normally reserved for US Cavalry units; such as the 11th ACR (Armored Cavalry Regiment), which was commanded by Colonel George S. Patton Jr. in Vietnam (son of WWII GENERAL PATTON). In the US Army (during Vietnam) a Battalion was approximately 600 men (but could be up to 900 men); in the Cavalry a "Battalion" was called a Squadron, and two or more squadrons equalled a Regiment. Two or more battalions equalled a brigade.

Is regiment bigger than a battalion?

I know in the marines a regiment is around 3,000 marines and a battalion is around 800, since the army has 4 times the population of the marines, I'm betting the numbers are much bigger, but the scale is probably the same, somewhere like a regiment is 8,000 soldiers and a battalion is around 1,500 soldiers. So, yes, a regiment is larger than a battalion.
