It is a plant and like most plants it has flowers that attract animals and insects to fertilize them. Once this has happened, they begin to form a fruit, in this case the squash.

Why won't squash produce?

Squash (Zucchini) can have a hard time producing if there is not ample insect interaction to pollinate the female flower. I will describe this procedure as delicately as I can. There are both male and female flowers on squash. Male flowers have a slim stem all the way to the flower. They also have a slender stamen in the middle of the flower. The female flower has a thicker stem and a small bulge under the flower (the beginning of the vegetable) the middle of the flower look like a receptor the male flower. Break the male flower off the stem, remove the flower from around the stamen and place the male flower base along with the stamen inside the female flower. You can move it around a bit to insure transfer of the pollen. You are fertilizing the female flower directly with the pollen from the male flower this way, taking the place of the bees that would normally transfer the pollen. I use this method constantly and so far this year have over 15 squash from 1 place

Where and how is squash grown?

Squash is grown in any warm climate. It requires a lot of sun so it's mostly grown in temerate or tropical climates. Each squash plan makes either a bushy plant or a vine depending on the variety. The plants flower and when the flower is polenated, the fruit (the squash) develops. When it's big enough for the use planned, it's picked.
