Opinion - the thesis is what you are trying to prove in your paper. William Shakespeare wrote many plays = not a thesis. William Shakespeare wrote plays to comment on political situations in his time = thesis. It can be argued. A thesis (unless the word is misused for a report) must be more than simply a factual summary. It should present a point of view, based on evidence and well reasoned; the reasoning must take into account evidence that runs counter - or appears to run counter to the author's views.
