Acrylic paint is not toxic for hermit crabs. Although if and when you paint them make sure the shells are empty, do not paint on the bottom or in the inside of the shell, and last when you are finished painting it, let it sit for 5-10 days to let poison dry out.

∙ 13y agoYou can but I highly discourage you because the paint will chip off and the hermit crab will eat it. Even if it is not toxic, because they eat so little, even a small chip will have a big effect on them and they will most likely get sick, which can be fatal. So in the long-run, non-toxic paint is just as bad for hermit crabs as paint that isn't non-toxic.

never buy painted shells. they are all toxic because they dissolve in saltwater. If you want, you can buy polished shells that don't have any type of gloss or paint coat. polished shells are perfectly safe an equally pretty!
