Colloids are a special type of solution with very small particles suspended within the solvent.

Colloids frequently appear "murky" or "opaque". The particles are large enough to scatter light. You have experience with the way fog interacts with the light from car headlights. Colloids generally do not separate on standing. They are not separated by filtration.

With ammonia nothing is in suspension. NH3 is not in a solution and when added to other compounds it becomes a different chemical. Example NH3 + H2O = NH4OH (Anhydrous Ammonia + Water = Ammonium Hydroxide)

Ammonium Hydroxide can not be separated back to NH3 and H20 by filtration.
